The article title reads, "Lonely heart's 'cheap thrills. NTU student stole MSN IDs; chatted, threatened blackmail." Putting the ethics of this "lonely soul" aside at the moment, I would like to comment that the journalist should be more responsible in what he write so as not to mislead the readers.
After read through the whole thing, I can't find anything that suggest the incident has anything to do with NTU nor the fact that the offender is a NTU student. In fact, it may actually give some people the impression that NTU students are less ethical. Furthermore, the writer provided more information on the offender by stating that he is a final-year accountancy undergraduate. Wow, what useful info huh? If the offender stays in say Bukit Batok (just an example lah), why don't the title reads, "A Bukit Batok student stole MSN IDs; chatted, threatened blackmail."
Anyway back to this guy, it really takes a cheap loser to go for such "cheap thrills". Obviously he surfs porn sites, which probably explains how he got the naked picture of a woman. He had found a trojan, planned his move carefully and targeted on young girls to try it out. He hijacked their MSN account and threatened them. He could have threatened them for other things but this horny bastard blackmailed them for their naked photos. If he wasn't caught, he could have done more nasty things.
His defence for himself was really lame too - "When he learned of the program ... he felt no one would be gullible enough to click on an unknown program and send the data back to him". Who in the right frame of mind will be so gullible to believe his mitigation? So its their own fault that they fell for his trick and therefore deserve to have their account hijacked??? The final words from his lawyer were equally lame, "he had merely "misread the rules of the Internet. He said the threat to publish nude pictures of the victim was merely a "joke". I don't know what the rules of the Internet are, but anyone can tell what he did was wrong. Who would find having nude pictures of them published as funny?
I think at the end of the day, what we should learn from this episode is not to be afraid of report to the police if you encounter such unethical people online.
