Sun Tech Days 2005/2006 Part Two.

I am back in one piece! Resisted the urge of taking the cab, I tricked my mind into thinking that I was not dizzy. With that second wind, I got home and saved 6 buckeroos. Day Two. More hands-on. Attended one on Studio Creator and one on Netbeans Profiler . Silly me did not bring my power adapter cuz I wanted to travel light. So I did not get much outta the first as I was worrying about my power most of the time and did not get to complete the lab. For the latter session I got help from the Friends of the Fujitsu fanclub (a student and a kind gentleman from IHPC) ha ha. The profiler is a very useful tool to analyse all those memory leaks and lousy code practices. As Joey Shen put it, "There are rumours that Java is slow, but it is slow only when your codes are not good." Yeah, something I can take back and tell my boss, "Hey we can use this! And its free!"... "So maybe more conferences for me next time?" heh heh. Seriously I recommend this tool. Its sor

Sun Tech Days 2005/2006.

It is Day-One of the Sun Tech Day. Noooo, not Suntec Day... Sun_Tech_Day. By the way, it is held at the Raffles City Convention Centre, not Suntec. heh heh . You can say I am a mountain beatle (shua-gu) , but this is the first conference-seminar I am attending as a professional, and I'm truly enjoying it alot. Perhaps it is because I can understand the technology better than during the school days (I could never imagine I can be doing programming for living). Or perhaps it is because I am recovering from fatigue. It had been awful in the past couple of days. I am about 80% back, but not so much of shakey and light-headedness anymore. Yeah, it feels good! So far the tracks had been really useful. Not too technical, but provided enough tips and info which we can bring back for our daily work. The demo by Joey Shen and Kiran Patelon on Extreme GUI Makeover was really impressive! It completely dispelled the myth that Java applications are dull and slow! In fact I love the instant m

Your Love Put Me On Paradise.

This year Valentine's Day present arrived early. And it was a huge surprise! Yes! My dear girlfriend bought us a pair of tickets to Franz Ferdinand live in Singapore! Look at those two glorious tickets below! Nerdy engineers to the rock concert! Yay yay! The last time I wenta a concert was Suede live at Habourfront donkey years ago. Anyway, if you are still wondering, who is/are Franz Ferdinand... where have you been? The Glasgow band is one of the most successful UK band in the past year. I first heard about them from the EP of the anime, Paradise Kiss. The catchy tune "Do You Want To" and the groovy dance move animation caught my attention. Both, highly recommended! Thank you dear for the wonderful present. I'm sure we will have a fantastic time coming Thurs. Below is my tribute to you. Happy Valentine!

The Code Economist.

After riding the wave of the Mobile Phone Cooked Egg hoax, I am back with another article. I think it is worthed reading, for both developers and users. It is an entry of Eric Sink's blog. He is a software developer with SourceGear. He dispels some myths about bugs and conveys the regret of developers when their products are buggy. I have been reading tech news and blogs quite regularly these couple of days. If you are wondering why I have the time to do all that and then blog about it here, don't wonder too much, let me tell you why! No, I wasn't slacking these couple of days lah , I was running some test that let the machine do all the work mah . So instead of idling (heh heh) or monitoring the screen every second, I catch up with my reading. Nuff' explanation from me, heh heh, here is my recommendation of the blog worth reading for fellow software developers. =)

HOWTO Cook An Egg with your Mobile Phone.

If you ain't so tech. savvy but wanna find out how "powerful" your mobile phone is and its potential in frying your brain, the article below could be an alternative way to do so. And of cuz, for those who are hungry, have an egg, a hi-fi set and a mobile phone handy. This article was posted on Slashdot (I am sure you guys all know and probably read this blog too right?), and originated from Wymsey Weekend . I am not suggesting you should do it, but it may be an interesting sight... before you get all so excited, you may want to read the comments on Slashdot as well! Enjoy! Weekend Eating: Mobile Cooking with Suzzanna Decantworthy additional research: Sean McCleanaugh Many students, and other young people, have little in the way of cooking skills but can usually get their hands on a couple of mobile phones. So, this week, we show you how to use two mobile phones to cook an egg which will make a change from phoning out for a pizza. Please note that this will not work with

Sawadee Kap.

I realised many people wenta BBK for holiday in the past few weeks. My colleague went. My friend, Orchard Road, went too. And he managed to blog about it timely. I am going to blog about my short Bangkok shopping trip. But I am no good at telling stories. So please bear with me. I am no stranger to BBK, this was my second trip to BBK in two years. The previous was a weeklong volunteering and cultural exchange trip with Chulalongkorn University. So it felt really good to be back there. The white shirt, black skirt, uniform was a familiar and eye-pleasing sight. Btw, do you know that those in tight shirt and short skirts are seniors, while those in loose shirt and long skirt are freshmen? I was quite impressed by the amount of respect the freshmen gave to their seniors during the previous trip. They actually bow and greet their seniors. When you think about Bangkok, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Let me guess, most of you will say "traffic jams". And traffic

Shuttle Run.

Have you been to a badminton training before? I have never been to one, but I saw some kids having badminton lessons at the sports complex. They were kind enough to show me the authentic shuttle run. heh heh.

It Crashes Because It is Microsoft.

After three attempts at blogging this week, am I finally gonna post one? I wanted to blog about my short Bangkok shopping trip, but it had been more than 2 weeks, everything gone stale. I wanted to blog about how overrated CNY is to me, but I am too lazy too do so. I wanted to blog about my lousy day at work, but I feel like a big whinner just by typing it. I came across the IE Blog today. They had released IE7 beta version for developers and users to test and report any bugs. The new UI seems pretty good. Especially the toolbar and tabbed browsing (although it is nothing new, but it is finally time that IE includes this feature). It wasn't surprising that within a few days many bugs including a possible security flaw were reported. The guys at Microsoft said that it was a known bug which will be fixed in the next build. I am not surprised at the number of bugs found, not because I think Microsoft products are highly flawed, but because Microsoft products always have their fair sh
