Drop Community Service Requirement.

Read a letter to the ST Forum today on dropping the community service requirement for primary and secondary students. When I recall my experiences of community service when I was young, I kinda agree with the author. Why should community service be a requirement in the first place when the emphasis is to cultivate the spirit volunteering for the welfare of the community we live in? The fact that it is compulsory seem to have the opposite effect. When I was a boy scout in primary school (believe it or not =p), we had this activity called the "Job Week". Apparently, they are still doing that now, as I heard from one of my tuition kid last weekend. It was sort of a volunteering work for the community and donating the earnings to the needy. But to me, as a 9-year old boy, it was more of a duty to be completed. The jobs were done for the sake of having to do them. It was more like asking for sympathy to give us something to do. I still remember I was told to wash a white car. It t

Good things in life

I was greeted with sound of running water last Sunday when I got back to hall. And I wondered who was bathing. 30mins later, that somebody was still bathing. An hour later, I decided to check it out. Nobody was bathing. Nah, its not some horror story, well, horror to some extend... the water heater was leaking. No hot water for one week. Well, perhaps even longer, cuz they said there's no stock for a new heater yet. Bathing cold water is kinda refreshing, brings back memory of bathing in icy cold water in Australia, where I have to pour pails of water and host up the shower bag so as to enjoy the luxury of bathing under the shower (maybe pictures of them next time). Anyway, weekend is here = warm water for bathing. You gotta appreciate even lil' things like this, nothing should be taken for granted. Especially family and friends. Gotta think twice before saying anything that might hurt someone you care. After a week of sleeping an average of 4 hours everyday, finally finished

Ruggers or mahjong?

I have nothing against ruggers. In fact sometimes I rather enjoy watchin the game. But those ruggers livin' opposite, are making helluva noise. As if walking alright their room in only undies with their doors wide open all the time (and even along the corridor), showing their not so flattering body, despite knowing there are lotsa female living opposite them, is not enough, they moved their playing field right into their rooms. Yesh, all the shouting and moaning (i can't make out what intelligent things they are uttering despite the high volume) during the golden hours of the night when everyone is trying hard to cope with their deadlines or trying to catch their power naps. These men, or maybe boys, are making known to us that they are enjoying themselves very much. What's a few games a mahjong in hostel compared to this level of noise? Which do you prefer to have in your hall? =b
