I must admit, I know very lil' about the movie. I have not the slightest idea what it was about, and not read any reviews, for goodness sake, I don't even know the name of the movie!!! Is it "V for Victory"... or "V for Veranda"? Oh forget it. Oh oh, I think I remember reading something about the name on Mr Brown's. V for Vendetta. But anyway, I caught the show with my girlfriend tonight. And it was fantastic!
It had been quite a while since we caught a movie, I don't even remember what was the last movie we watched. Finally we get to use our free movie passes! And I must say, we are always lucky to catch the good ones.
My expectations for the show increased after my girlfriend fed me some info. It was adapted from a graphic novel and produced by the makers of The Matrix! Yes, movies adapted from graphic novels, such as Sin City, and Constantine, were great, in addition, throw in the CG magic from the Wachowski brothers. Certainly the right recipes for blockbuster.
Warning: The following may contain spoilers...
On the surface, the plot seemed typical and simple. Vengeance and violence from hatred. Payback time. It is more than that...
It is the power of ideas. The act of violence based on belief. Blowing up a building as a symbol of the idea. The essence of terrorism. Perhaps that is the reason for the controversies I heard about. Perhaps many may think that it is selling the idea of terrorism. But hey, you don't need a movie to learn what terrorism is.
It is a mockery of the evils of the world. Using terrorism against these evils. There were many elements of evils in the show, the pedophilic bishop, the power hunger man seeking his goals at the expense of the innocents, the big brother watching, prying into the privacy of everyone. Legalised evils hidding behind the mask of the authority. On the other hand, men and women are awaken by this terrorism, giving them the rights to their own ideas. The illusion of peace through compliance, at the cost of rights of your own thinkings.
In the cell, they take away your everything, except your life. But when you are no longer afraid of death, you have gained something, your rights to your ideals. Yes, that is the fundamental of terrorism, but does it equal to terrorism we see today? Is it the same as suicide bombings in trains, hijacking of airplanes, the religion extremists? The confused may twist the facts and argue it is the same. But there is a huge difference, the ideas behind their actions. When there are huge number of innocent victims, something must be really wrong with their ideas.
Although there was only a scene where we can see the face of Hugo Weaving (not as V himself), it was obvious that the man behind the mask is a genius in acting. And Natalie Portman showed that she has come a long way since her days as Queen Amidala. Stephen Rea's superb acting also guided the audience through each of V's next move. I like the witty lines in the show, such as the vvvvverrrrrryyyyy long introduction of V himself with lotsa vvvvvVVVVVVeeeeee. The lines I like most was the scene when Evey (Natalie Portman) asked V who he was, and V replied, "Who? Who is but the form following the function of what. And what I am is a man in a mask." Evey remarked, "I can see that", to which V said, "Of course you can. I am not questioning your powers of observation. I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is." Ha! And of cuz, the FMA kinda "Law of Equivalent Trade" between causes and reactions.
Towards the end of the show, there were more Wachowski brothers trademark Matrix slow-mo moves. I think the real magic were the CGs that did not look like CG at all. In other words, they are so real that we probably think they are real. The highlight was the blowing up of Big Ben. Reality check, why would the British government let them do that??? Are you sure that is CG??? It has to be!
The verdict: 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.
