Each Man For His Own.

I read, with distain on the reports of looting, violence, and rape, cops turned terrorists, in the aftermath of the disaster in New Orleans. The reason is obvious. Of cuz, one might say it is easy to cross our arms and criticise when we are sitting comfortable here in Singapore. And that is exactly the question which I pondered for a while, "What if it had happened to us?".

How would Singaporeans have reacted to such catastrophic crisis in our own backyard? I can only make some guesses, based on my observations our peacetime behaviour. Of cuz we have proven to be very generous and benevolent when it comes to helping our global neighbours and donating to the needy of the society (as well as to the organizers of the idols & superstars shows as well). But I think it will be quite a different matter when we become the victims. Will the kind hearts stay with us? Will the Kiasu nature of us, which we are proud of for delivering us to stand on par with the top-notch economies globally, become a double edge sword, which will transform us into savage beasts and monsters in times of crisis?

Let me being my deduction from my favourite place for observation, the train. While I was reading about the great catastrophe, I saw a mother letting her daughter lie across two seats. The little girl, about four to five, was not really sleeping, just lying on her mother's lap. This would be a perfect lovely scene, just that they were in an increasingly crowded carriage, with other little children and old folks looking for a seat as well. It did not bother the mother abit. Just as I was about to alight at City Hall, I heard another parent giving her son an important advice at the door. An important lesson for the boy as she nudged him against the door," 快点,等一下不可以下车!"(better be quick, otherwise we may not be able to alight the train). Looks like it is every man for his own, or at least for his children.

My deduction is probably flawed. Perhaps these are just small isolated incidents, not enough volume to represent the majority of our citizens. In the face of crisis we will we be able to rise to the occasion. I have faith, that we will.

Evolution. Nature has always been that the fittest would survive.

Thus it's by our instincts that we run when we are(or think we are) in danger.

I'm reminded of the stampede in Iraq bomb scare...

Hence I think its an "Each man for his own" case if something catastrophic were to happen. Only a few rare persons would be saving others.

I agree few will be saving others. But looting and raping? It seems that their mentality is very different.

Its right to save your own skin but why harm others?

I'm thinking perhaps there has always been some oppressed racial undercurrents going on, the hurricane just sort of becomes the chance or venue where they can take advantage as everyone is equal liao.

The Bridal Dowry.

The delivery of dowry ( 送嫁妆 ) is another important custom. It represents parent's effort for her daughter to have a good life after marriage and prepare her with the necessities for being a good wife. I am amazed by some of the things included in the dowry. Of course, in our modern living, we will not be using some of those things... Nevertheless, I think it is all good to have them, as each item carries a good meaning for our blissful marriage. :-)

Resolutions 2012.

While my one-year-old is going for his first steps, I am also learning to walk (again). 2011 was full of ups and downs.  I was promoted for the 2nd time in my first job. Not fantastic but not bad either after six years. The challenging issues justifies for the few more dollars increment to the stipend. Murphy is my good friend. With only the final milestone left, I hope to overcome all odds and pull the rabbit outta the hat in 2012! If I am lucky, I may run another project.  For the consecutive year, I expended all my medical leave. After hearing my story, some may say 父爱是伟大的. Some may think I was pure clumsy. As my son likes to watch basketball playing, I decided to show him how to do it myself. At first I felt good, I got it plenty of shots. Unfortunately, I broke my ACL while chasing after the ball. It has been two months and my knee is still weak and hurts occasionally. I plan to go for surgery in 2012, while performing the balancing act of pulling the rabbit and recup...

The Last 24 Hours, Twenty-Twelve.

It is becoming a tradition. This is the fourth time for me. This year, two new companions joined me for this journey in the last 24 hours of 2012. As usual, is only for a few hours in the afternoon. But I like the sound of it, "last 24 hours".  It started out in 2008 for me, a ala    Eye é City . For the record, it was another rainy new year's eve. We started our journey at Thian Hock Keng, Amoy Street and ended at Raffles City Shopping Centre. It was interesting for me as it was my first time to Thian Hock Keng. This year, instead of posting the photos here, I have uploaded them to my Flickr account . The photos look better there as I don't have to reduce the size of the photos for this blog. I will re-edit the past photos and upload them as well when I am free. Who will join me next year? You can sign up now!
