Letters from Iwo Jima.

War films. I thought I had watched them all. I was wrong. The Letters from Iwo Jima is more than just a story of the Battle of Iwo Jima told from the Japanese's perspective. It tells the story of fighting a battle when knowing that losing is imminent. Besides following closely to the events of this battle, it intimately portrays the many different characters of the Japanese soldiers. It touched on issues of leadership, compassion, humanity, the dark sides of human, and loyalty (in both intelligent and foolish ways).

Superb acting. Realistic effects. I find two scenes particularly memorable. One, where the MG gunner had his arm blown off. Two, where the men committed suicide by individually blowing themselves to death with grenades in the caves.

I think what the movie may be trying to convey is that in a battle, no matter one is Japanese or American, he is following his conviction to protect his family by following the orders of his country's leader to go to war. In one scene, Baron Takeichi Nishi told his men, "Do what is right because it's right." When the end is near, each man has to decide for himself what is the right thing to do. Ironically, he was quoting from the letter which the American POW had with him, a letter from the American soldier's mum. He treated the POW with respect and gave him medical treatment. He showed his men that Japanese soldiers were not that different from the Americans, and merely on different sides of the war.

And why "Letters"? I shall leave you to find out from the show.

A five star performance! One of the best war film I have watched since Saving Private Ryan!

The Bridal Dowry.

The delivery of dowry ( 送嫁妆 ) is another important custom. It represents parent's effort for her daughter to have a good life after marriage and prepare her with the necessities for being a good wife. I am amazed by some of the things included in the dowry. Of course, in our modern living, we will not be using some of those things... Nevertheless, I think it is all good to have them, as each item carries a good meaning for our blissful marriage. :-)

Shopping for Perfume.

If you want to buy original but cheaper perfume in Singapore, you'd probably go to Lucky Plaza . You can bargain at the perfume shops in Lucky Plaza which is the exact reason why anyone would wanna shop at Lucky Plaza. I went there with a friend to shop for some perfume this afternoon. It was a shopping experience I never had before in Singapore. As a matter of fact, never before in my life or anywhere in the world. I usually visit the two shops near McDonald's . Today we decided check out another shop since we had walked from the "Lucky Plaza - Ngee Ann City underpass". We had in mind one of the brand we wanted. So after asking the price, we looked for the 2nd bottle of brand, but at a lower budget. We tested three, can't decide and asked for recommendation from the boss, an Indian lady (not being racist, its just the fact it happened to be an Indian shop). She showed me a black face (no pun intended! heh ) and said my budget was too low. She probably wasn'...

If you have it, just flaunt it.

Its such a lousy day, I have decided to blog another entry. Yesh, I am thinking about things other than my last two papers on Thurs and Friday. Something probably talked alot before by many people... What is it with men and women with 可爱-oooii *杨丞琳's voice* face, long tresses, slim legs, curvey body, in revealing tight clothes (only for those with the former characteristics), in pink. Why are men so attracted to those features? The guy is lying if he says he will not turn his head when he sees women with those features. I think it has nothing to do with men being lustful or anything disgusting. It probably has something to do with the genes, the hormones. I don't believe it has to do with things like its men's nature instinct to look for partners who can reproduce blahblahblah. That's so boring! Its something mysterious, something that let men derives pleasure by just looking openly, without doing anything bad or harmful or immoral. Do women ogle at men all the time too...
