No Monday blues for me today cuz I am on off. My mum asked me, "Why take off?". And I replied, "Cuz if don't take the off, then I will need to return it." Well, I think I was sort of rude to my mum to give that kind of reply. But I felt it was too troublesome to give that elaborated reply - "I'm taking off to study for SCJP". She'd go, "What's SCJP?" and "Why take SCJP", and "How much it cost to take SCJP"... and on and on. I thought only teenagers face that kind of problem? When you grow older, you don't talk much to your parents anymore mah, of cuz should not have such problems? I guess I am still my Mama's boy. Although I am definitely not a Mama's boy.
Anyway, the cool thing about being on off is that I am actually at the new Bishan Community Library (BiCL) right now to do my studying. Decided to try some "live blogging" after I saw a student doing that at one of the terminals. I am not doing it from "one of those terminals" lah (not sure whether need to pay to log on those terminal$). In any case, the marvellous thing bout BiCL is that the whole place is covered by FREE wi-fi connection.
The not-so-marvellous thing is, there ain't any dedicated tables with power sockets where you can dock your machines - or maybe I have not tried looking hard enough? In any case, I am lucky enough to find this pillar with seats and 2 power sockets that are labelled "For laptop users only". There are also two complimentary LAN points beside the sockets. So folks with no wi-fi NIC bring your LAN cable. hah hah.
Aside from some grumbles about the lack of tables for laptops, the new BiCL is a pleasant place to read, study and relax, or even sleep (saw some folks sleeping soundly at the "quiet reading room")! Its design is in-line with all the new or renovated community libraries, very cosy and sleek. The ramps between level 1 and 2 and lifts provide accessibility for the disabled - very thoughtful. The unique features of BiCL are these "Pods".
Got the following description off the NLB site, "These 'pods' are cantilevered off the building's main facade and in the building atrium to create move private spaces by adding a touch of individual within the library. They act as spaces for quiet reflection by individual users". Wow, space for reflection - Brilliant IDEA! Kudos to whoever came up with such a wonderful idea. Would be nice if there are cushions (to lean on) and some power sockets (the more the merrier!) nearby as well! Strangely, I spotted a couple in one of these pods, with one lying on the thighs of the other. Hmmmm...
I'll have too end here. Otherwise I will be able to fry eggs on my lap soon (laptops should remain on tables and not on laps)... And I really should be doing my studying now. =p
Btw, if you library folks are reading, perhaps it'll also be nice to have photocopying machines on every level of the adult sections. =)
