Everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong. Well almost...
First, the drivers for the chipset and other onboard drivers could not be installed without any obvious reason of errors. God knows why the drivers of the Intel motherboard devices are tied to the OS.. Need at least XP SP2 to work.
Then next I was unable to connect to the Internet. Despite applying all my networking knowledge, I was unable to fix it. And in the end, it took a hard reset to the cable modem to work. Apparently, putting it to standby mode doesn't work. You see, I use a modem router, so I don't know that you need to restart the modem if you associate it with a new MAC address (I assume you need to do that).
Then it came to installing the web-cam. The blue screen of death greeted me. The Logitech driver clashes with some onboard devices. Boo-hoo. So I happily downloaded one driver after another. Even the latest one crashed the machine.
And then TADA! We (me and my girlfriend's mum) finally got to see my girlfriend on the video call! It was a great relief for me until she started talking - she sounded like a lion growling!!! The web-cam driver clashed with the audio driver and made her sound really "manly". And then after another round of downgrading of driver for the web-cam, it finally worked! Well, not exactly... sometimes it'll revert her back to the "lion-voice".
Either some drivers developers out there ain't doing a good job, or I had been absolutely unlucky. Forget about the fantastic user interface, at the end of the day, users just need it to get the job done. =op
